Comments:

Production started in 1992 with the 240PS WRX. Since then power has risen to the Japanese limit of 280PS. Newer versions cannot exceed this limit but produce more torque in an effort to improve performance. (22B has a 2.2 litre engine but stays within the 280PS rule.)

The STi has a stiffer body, better brakes and seats, and an engine that revs to 8,000 rpm. The 2 door coupe (type R) has shorter gearing, an adjustable differential, an intercooler water spray, and better brakes. However it looses the ABS as it is not compatible with the adjustable differential.

Type RA models are available in WRX and STi. They are stripped of sound proofing and lose the air con, power windows and central locking. They have the short gearing of the 2 door coupe. They are the lightest and fastest models and even the WRX type RA (the cheapest one) can accelerate from 0-60 in approx 4.5 seconds.

The performance is almost unreal and the flat 4 engine gives a unique powerful feel. The 4 wheel drive system gives traction and security even in the wet.

Great reliability. Synchro between 4th and 5th tends to go if driven hard.

Very limited colour range in Japan. White most common, then silver, black and red. Limited versions available in yellow and 555 blue.

Almost as good as a Lancer !!
